The Chevrolet Corvette has long been regarded as the pinnacle of American performance. However, it would have been unimaginable in the past to consider electrification or hybrid technology for the Corvette, as GM representatives scoffed at such ideas in the 1990s and 2000s, despite occasionally showcasing concepts. Finally, after much anticipation, the unveiling of the 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray marks a significant shift, introducing all-wheel drive, hybrid technology, and a touch of flair to the sports car segment.
At first glance, the hybrid E-Ray model may appear similar to other Stingray models, with its core exterior design largely carried over. However, it features a redesigned front fascia and new vent pieces integrated into the rear bumper. Additionally, the E-Ray is slightly wider than the standard Stingray, and the five-spoke alloy wheels are exclusive to this model.
An optional graphics package adds striking Electric Blue stripes along the sides, and the E-Ray also borrows carbon ceramic brake rotors from the Z06. Customers have the choice of fourteen different colors, including three new options: Riptide Blue, Cacti, and Seawolf Gray. The interior remains largely unchanged from the standard Corvette, but a new Dipped Artemis package adds a dark green accent throughout, available only for 2024. A carbon fiber-infused body kit is also offered, with more accessories promised for the E-Ray.
Contrary to earlier rumors, the E-Ray is not a purely electric vehicle but rather a traditional hybrid. It features a mid-mounted 6.2-liter LT2 V8 engine producing 495 horsepower, paired with a front-mounted electric motor generating 160 horsepower. This combination results in a total output of 665 horsepower and enables the Corvette to achieve functional all-wheel drive. The E-Ray can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, with a quarter-mile time of 10.5 seconds at 130 mph. While this performance is impressive, it comes with a weight increase of over 400 pounds for the coupe and 338 pounds for the convertible. A 1.9 kWh battery pack powers the electric motor and facilitates the new “Stealth Mode,” allowing the Corvette to operate quietly at speeds up to 45 mph before the V8 kicks in.
Handling is enhanced by the inclusion of Magnetic Ride Control 4.0, which features a special tuning specific to the E-Ray. All-season tires are standard, but buyers can opt for stickier summer tires. Chevrolet also promises steering and suspension upgrades for the E-Ray. Furthermore, this model introduces new features across the Corvette lineup, including advanced driver-assistance technology such as forward collision alerts, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking.
